ELK, the majestic animal my husband is doing his research on.....

I took this photo in Yellowstone National Park. Whatever the season, you should try to go at least once in your life.

An unknown language barriers...

Setting the scene: Another Arctic invasion on Quebec City. I just finished talking with a friend from work. Relieved that my day was done I relaxed my mind and body. Shivering, I wait patiently for the limo (dream)...I wait impatiently for the bus. Sigh. Near me, four little old ladies (you know about 45....joke that is only 8 years older than me...) are huddled together like a gaggle of geese. One of them turns to me-

"Are you not from here darling(or some well intended verbal gesture, I can not remember exactly)?"...asked the lady with a turquoise coat, swaddled in winters finest apparel.

Me: "No, was it my terrible French that gave it away?" said with a crocked, apologetic smile.

Happy honks from the Canada geese.

"So where do you live?" asked another cute lady who was decked out in a red wool, fur trimmed, somewhat practical winter coat.

Me: "Oh, Sacrement (french spelling).... ummmm.....". That is the name of one street corner and I couldn't think of the other.

I puffed up a little knowing that I learned how to answer this in French class. While digging deep into my internal French dictionary (currently housing 25 words), clearing my way through the mental cobwebs... it was right there on the tip of my tongue. Getting out of my head and back into reality, I hear gasps from the group of ladies while they are stepping backwards. The roaring of another bus approached and the ladies waddled towards it, rapidly speaking French, shaking their heads. I'm a little perplexed, but that is somewhat normal these days. A few ladies gave me a second glance. Relieved, because I got out of discussing my neighborhood. I gave my friendliest smile and waved them off.

Was that a dagger I just saw one of the old ladies throw? Was that directed at me? What? The? Beep?

Puzzled by their reaction? Me too, until I learned that Sacrement is a very bad swear word. So, basically when asked by the cute ladies where I lived, I replied by saying OH Fu&$. Yup, I cussed out the geese in one fowl swoop.

*Note: If your traveling to Q.C. and do not want to cuss out little old ladies steer clear of the church....and if your here on a religious quest, give me a call. I now have the down low on what words, NOT to say. All the bad words are based off of the "things" within a church. Without saying them here are a few:

SPT= Self Portrait Tuesday

Last of the February Self Portrait Tuesday "Love" thoughts. I am saying "I love you" when....

I cuddle up next to you in a sleeping bag somewhere deep in the woods...sometimes with out running water or electricity(no toilet)....sometimes for months at a time, but deep down having this time with you is the one thing that truly fills my heart up. Who would have thought such a thing?

Monday, February 23

I am officially over whelmed over nothing.... how is that possible?

Here are the things clogging my ability to move in any direction:

-I'm trying to change the look of my blog. I am computer challenged. I want it done now, not in three weeks like most people are telling me when I contact them for their services. I have been watching "how to" tutorials on Youtube and now want to throw my computer because I am totally frustrated at their ability to make it look super-duper easy.
-I want to write a snippet on the Oscars, but why? Except did you see the tacky, "I want to get a raise move" from the camera man who panned in on Angelina while Jennifer was talking (more than once)....come on. The only reason I really looked was to catch another glimpse of the green jewels Angelina was flaunting.
-I called to rearrange my work schedule today and the lady who answers the phone (who has the ability to alter my day by the way she speaks to me....which usually leads to throwing a pillow or crying into one) was once again the most unfriendly, uncaring, rude (maybe I just do not understand her...) person.
-Being away for the weekend leads to hours of really good posts unread by me....a bit of anxiety, why?
-I have John Denver singing my song..."Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy" actually sunshine with warmth on any part of my body would make me happy right about now. I need some warm tropical sun... I know join the club.

-Yeah, I get to announce the winner of the $25.00 gift card...Thanks to all of you who participated! I love having contests and I really enjoy reading the comments left by other bloggers. Drum roll..... The winner of my 100th post celebration is: A Family Completed, she will be receiving a gift card to...Amazon.

Who has really made it this far in this monstrosity of a post? I am so sorry.... Mama's meds are not working today.

Oh, if you are looking for someone who is making sense today and is going to have some fun click over to Coffee with the Mrs. She is having a Live Giveaway tonight for a Clickfree. A what? A Clickfree: "Finally, backup so easy anyone can use it. Just connect to your computer and Clickfree™ will automatically find, organize, and back up all of your important data." Way cool for blogger peeps.

Maybe later when I can put two thoughts together that will actually form a sentence I'll tell you about my overnight into the great wild woods...with no running water or indoor plumbing that we actually had to pay for. Color us crazy!

Happy Birthday and Deviled Eggs

(Not my photo....)
Is it a sign that I am getting older when I make deviled eggs for a party? Seriously, what is up with that? I honestly had no idea where this thought came from. One minute I am looking in the fridge for inspiration and the next thing I know....shazam...I'm boiling eggs. The best or maybe worst part was that I had to call my mom (who is sun bathing in Florida while I'm freeze my &^% off here in Quebec) to get her recipe. Oh wait, I first looked in the cookbook she made for "the girls" one year as Christmas gifts. When I found the recipe it said to add a dash of this, a pinch of that and something to taste.... what does that mean? Lingo my peeps don't use. We say things like "can that be delivered"....or "what time will that be ready".... Isn't that sad? (A bit of an exaggeration, but you get it.)

Husband: "What are you going to make for the party?"
Me: "You know, I boiled some eggs and I'm thinking about making d. eggs."
Husband: "Are you kidding?"
Me: "No."
Husband: "Ohhhhh...."
Me: "What?"

He prepared a delectable venison medallions with herbed cheese sauce dish. So much cooler than mine.

To fill you in...the party was for my friend who turned 40 today. There were 4 of us planning this surprise shindig. 40th balloons strewn about, obnoxious confetti sprinkled on the the tables, friends from work and play gathered in the kitchen to shout Bonne Fete. She was surprised and very happy. The food was wonderful and my deviled eggs were gone in the first round. For the record, pate freaks me out and I have yet to go to a Q.C. party where it is absent from the fixens. Oh, and stinky cheese is a popular favorite here too. Locker room, dirty socks, B.O. stinky....and they devour it. They love it. I can not get past the smell. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the cultural differences, but that cheese stinks.

*Awkward moment of the night: I am carrying one of the four cakes into the room full of people, the other three were close behind me. (A birthday cake train.) In my best mid soprano singing voice (a little Marilyn Monroe huskiness for effect)... out comes "Happy Birthday to you...." while the other 20 people start to sing "Bonne Fete....."IN FRENCH. Ding , Ding, Ding....who let the Anglophone lead the pack?

Wordless Wednesday...except for the moaning

I was not in the right frame of mind when my husband suggested doing a fitness routine together. I was not in the right frame of mind when I put the disc in all by myself and decided to willingly participate in this random act of self torture yesterday afternoon.
Another new item of physical decor...the pull up bar. (No, I can not do one.)

Outcome~

Dear Husband,

I am sorry to inform you that your wife is laying on the dinning room floor crippled in pain. She may need medical attention and a lawyer to sue P90X. Note: Dinning rooms are for eating not working out. It is evil to look at the table (where food should be) while working out. Witness the transformation...that's my table.

Update:

Swift medical attention has been taken. If you need your wife she will most likely be in a backless hospital gown with her flabby (very white) butt sticking out the back. Just listen closely for the moaning noise and you will find her.

Sincerely in pain,
Your Wife

Note to self: When you start the disc and it says, "This is the Mother of all Workouts" you are being fairly warned and you are not to take this lightly ever again.

Cupcakes and fight against ovarian cancer, how cool! It is especially cool to me since I am an Ovarian Cancer Survivor.....(Woo! Hoo!) A few weeks ago I wrote a post about my battle. (Here) Well, I didn't actually say what I was fighting, I just alluded to it while I wrote about some of my feelings. I was 20 years old and scared poop-less, but with truly talents and caring doctors (with good research funds), nurses, friends and family I am here today and can help fight the fight. Statistics on Ovarian Cancer.

Join me in the fight, it only takes a few minutes and you could be saving someone's life.....like mine.

You a have a couple options: you can sign up under your own name and register to win a new Red Hot Red Washer and Dryer from Electrolux, you can sign up under Zen Cupcake (log in:zencupcake password:cupcake) or mine (log in:AnnOnandOn password: lowman08). Oh, my heart! It's Friday Foto Finish Fiesta & a 100th post give-a-way!

What a Priday...we have Friday Foto Finish Fiesta and a gift-a-way! For real, it is more like a celebration because I have successfully reached 100 posts. Woo Hoo Streamers flying! Confetti littering the floor! Annoying little noise makers in your ear! Party!

First things first, Friday Foto Finish Fiesta with a little story to go along with it.

Hearts are not my thing, but I do have a very good reason that I failed to share with you. It's a sad story about a girl who o.d.'d on hearts. It is the mid 90's, oh I like this part....I was skinny and running a very high volume retail store. Think back to those days if you will, spiral perms on the way out and bangs were back. My store was the ground breaking, start of something new, something fabulous and super pink. It was no longer a Secret of Victoria's because everybody was gossiping about the new pull them up, push them together- sexy bras. It was also the start of Victoria's Secret Bath and Fragrance as a separate company . My gia-normus store was pink with dangling, sparkling, glimmering HearTs. I had to wear a pink smock with a heart on it. They fed us intravenously to pee pink. Seriously, it was hot flippen pink and I spent more than 60 hours a week there. When I went home at night I smelled like a pear and coughed up little pink fur balls...with hearts in them.

"I'm bringing hearts back, you other symbols don't no how to act"...(To the tune of I'm bringing Sexy back) That's right for the first time in years I made heart cookies, I bought heart candles and I am feeling hear-tab-u-lous.

Roll'en in the dough, oops I mean rolling the dough.....

The final product, some didn't make it (Taps sounding in the background) I took one for the team. (Actually, about 7...)

What about the 100th celebration? Honestly, when I started I wondered if I would ever make it to the 100th post.....YiPpY, I did!
Keeping with the 100 theme... 100 quarters= $25.00 Who wants to win $25.00 gift card? Well, than all you have to do to be a part of this gift-a-way is tell me where you would like a gift card from. One lucky winner! This gift-a-way will end Saturday, February 2ist.

I love being carded! Card Swap!!!

JANUARY 2010-PLEASE NOTE:
THIS CARD SWAP HAS BEEN ALTERED JUST A LITTLE BIT...

  • WE NOW SEND JUST ONE CARD A MONTH TO AN ASSIGNED PERSON
  • WE SEND ONE CARD TO "THE LUCKY ONE" (Read more below)
THAT MEANS WE SEND A TOTAL OF TWO CARDS A MONTH.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED PLEASE EMAIL ME AT: amerskine at hotmail dot com
Thanks you!

"Excuse me Maam, I am going to need to see your ID."

"Who me? I'm not a day over 21." (Fingers crossed behind my back with a mischievous smirk.)

No, it's not that kind of carded. It's the good kind, if you like mail. Who doesn't love going to the mailbox and getting a random card or note from a friend? I felt the love last fall when my husband and I were doing field work in Idaho. By far it was the most mail I have received in years. I can not stop thinking about how much fun it was and how special I felt. Now, I want you to experience "Good Mail" loven.

Why did I highlight "Good Mail".... It is all part of the plan. One of the people responsible for my mailbox glee has an Etsy shop where she sells "Good Mail" stickers. Examples:

$7.99 for 60 stickers....math is not my forte, but I think that comes to about .13 a sticker. ***This is a special price for us so let Jill know it is for the "I Love Being Carder".*** Free Shipping!***

Why "Good Mail" stickers? Well, this is a great way to identify our GANG. You know it's our way of throwing signs. ;D

For a month or so, I will collect the names of those interested. Then, I will create an invite only blog, for privacy due to personal information. Two things will happen....Every other week (that is once every two weeks) you will receive a name, example 1-50 people...1 sends a card to 2, 2 sends a card to 3, 3 to 4.... Then the next month 1 will send a card to 3, 2 to 4..... Don't worry, each month I will give FULL detail. Then ONE lucky person will be carded by all of us. Can you imagine how cool it will be to get 50+ cards in the mail? What will you write in the card? Anything you want, but I will also provide a question for you to answer, kind of like an ice breaker. Ex. What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

What do you think? Do you like mail? Do you want to be involved? One person every two weeks, is that good? Leave a comment and I will communicate with you through email/blog. SO, Leave me you email address, please!

*Try to order your "GOOD MAIL" stickers so you have them when we get started. If you can not or do not want to use the Good Mail stickers...I understand, just make sure to write "Good Mail" on the outside of the card. Have fun, make the card or buy them...it is your call. Ohhh, I am so excited!

To get things rolling I am having a give-a-way....STAMPS of course. 2 winners will win a booklet of stamps. Winners announced when the contest starts.

Hey...spread the word. The more the merrier.

One more super fun thing to talk about... Congrats to Monkeys ARDently In Sinc who said...

I have a hate-love relationship with Valentine's day. I hate it, because it reminds me of the year I was separated from my husband (he was deployed). Then every year after, I try to ignore it, but in the secret recesses of my heart, I want the heart chocolates and the dozen roses, and the lovey-dovey things that go along with the holiday. Argh!

She is the winner of The Good Smelling Valentine's gift-a-way! Thank you, you and you.( Yes, I mean you!) I will have another contest this week, Yippy~Zippy!

Grab the button...share the swap with your blog buddies.

Special Delivery

What was the bus like yesterday, ummm have you ever sniffed the inside of a Frito bag? I do not recommend it. Holy stinky something/someone batman. I am however subject to this daily punishment because I am now in possession of a bus pass. (First time) Since this little piece of plastic cost $75.00 I plan to get on every bus I see, just because I can. (Usually, $2.60 a ride or $6.50 for a day pass.) Yesterday, I agreed to take a few jobs teaching outside of the city, (more stinky rides) so my employer is paying for my bus pass. (So Cool.) Of course, I will be armed with Lysol. (Wouldn't that be so funny...squirt.squirt.) My random Wednesday night bus ride: an old man pulls out a harmonica, yup, and started playing.

Friday: This week I had the same student 5 hours a day for three days. For certain, this is more time than I spend with my husband. Leaving work. Sigh. I was heading to get some Vodka (joke). I was however going to the grocery store.

On foot, I have to be mindful of the quantity. Red basket in hand I sauntered up and down a few aisles, then rounding the corner the handle broke. Groceries here and there, helpful French words in my ear and sweat rolling down my back...I sheepishly "merci-ed" those around and ran to get a cart. Now, pushing my handicap cart...you know the one that doesn't take corners and makes a screeching sound as you push it...I filled my mental curse card while pushing my jacked up cart trying to finish. Check out time. Avoiding eye contact, hoping for less interaction, a cannon of perky French words fired in my ear. Crap, I was busted. "Je parle français un peu...désolé". I speak French just a little, sorry. A sentence mastered and abused. Next thing I know some man in another aisle is translating what the cashier is telling me. (I am turning red and being stared at like the bearded lady at the circus. Note to self check chin for Billy Goat hairs...thank you menopause) Not only were the words in English they were also the lovelies words...."would you like these delivered?" Tears in my eyes (good ones), "pardon" (the French way of saying it). Without another thought I was writing my address down. With empty arms I skipped out of the store and onto the more than usual crowded bus.

Breathing through my mouth, smile on my face, walking (with a few twirls) 8 blocks in the -0 weather, turning my key, sitting on my couch, answering the door....my groceries were delivered. A $ 3.00 service.

If your wondering, and I am quite certain you are not holding your breath wondering, but I am still sitting on my bed in my robe. Eating dried fruit(not pictured), Munchies Snack Mix(Super melange), drinking Nestle Pure Lite Sparkling Lime water (Petillante Lime), computer on my lap, phone by my side and a plethora of other goods on standby. My plan was to do nothing until 2:00, but I am having so much fun I thought I would do this a little longer.

Last night my active mind disorder (self diagnosed) kicked in, so I made a mess- I mean- I made cards until 2:00 am. This morning they were not as cute as I remembered. Drats!

Now, just because I can, I think I'll jump on a bus heading in a new direction...jump off after a few minutes and try it again. I heart my new smelly wagon, taken me anywhere plastic card.

Thinking

I spent the first part of the day thinking about the things I should be doing.
I spent another part of the day doing things that didn't really need to be done, as much as other things that I was thinking about doing.
In the middle of all that I almost forgot I had to work. A serious dash to the bus stop (I feel 6 when I talk about taking the bus, even though I am part of the majority here.)
When I got to work, I started thinking about...then writing a list of things that I should do on my way home and when I get home. (I left work at 8:50pm)
I am home. Now, I am thinking about everything but the things that I should be doing.

I'd rather blog. Addiction at it's best!

*On my list tomorrow, find a heart cookie cutter for my heart phobia. Make something heart related. :D
CLICK HERE, to enter my Lovey Dovey Gift-a-way... it will make my heart happy if you do... (Hearts!Hearts! And more Hearts!)

Misc. going on....

Last night Jaige and I went to a friends for dinner. Belly protruding, outside of its norm from the healthy intake we then we packed into the car. Yup, a car...no bus (SMILE) to see the Banff Mountain Film Festival.(watch intro. video) Note to self...take anxiety meds before going to see again. Fingers gripping the seat,Wow. This is a must see if you like watching death defying almost un-human like talents. (Ex.mountain climbing, kayaking, base jumping...) In a way, it is like watching Planet Earth and Ripley's Believe it or Not together. Feeling somewhat motivated by their super strength, but mostly tired I heaved myself on to my bed and tried to write. To my despair all the talent on screen zapped mine. I challenged myself (and my husband) to come up with a list of "I'm damn good at....". Is it o.k. if I am just good at something? If you could be damn good at something what would it be? While I worked on my list I fell asleep. ZZZzzzzz.

Morning...next thought-

11:19 a.m.- My mind is in second place at the Indy.500 (lap 419). I just realized that I am driving the wrong way on the track. I have that "what direction" to go in first feeling. Oh, did I mention that my feet have been hobbled? This is the reason my body still lays in bed. Yes, this morning I am a complete mess. Time to put my tennis shoe on. For some reason, when I put them on I am productive and I need to be productive this afternoon. Off I go....

One more thing, last one I promise....
I've been thinking about my heart shaped phobia. It's a little like embroidered sweatshirts with kittens, ponies or flowers. Not so much fun, but you (might) wear it out of love for the person who gave it to you. Seriously, if a niece or nephew gave me one (don't encourage them siblings) I would totally wear it.
I am not going to wear heart jewelry...I am however going to make fun heart cookies or a cake or a heart shaped hamburger for my hubby. In fact I am going to go heart crazy. Documentation to follow. CLICK HERE to understand what I am talking about and to participate in my GIFT-A-WAY
