What is the last time you did something for the first time....

Took time to smell the roses....

and, shared it with someone?

It's such a gift to be a part of someone's life.
Have a wonderful Saturday~

Do you think she knows?

While driving home from work last night I was listening to a talk radio host, who was speaking on the subject of Elizabeth Taylor's death. The host asked the following question.....

"Do you think she knows what people are saying about her today?"

It was a gentle reminder for me to take time to tell someone
how important they are in my life.

There's no time like the present.

"We put our cars in the shop more than we put ourselves in the shop."

When is the last time you did something for yourself?

May the sun shine on you today.

The Door

Opportunity and options.

What do you do to make sure your doors stay open?

Some days I feel like my fingers are loosing their grip on the only door that
I can unlock while other days it's like every door within reach is meant for
me to walk through.

Confused, overwhelmed, unsure I step backwards instead.

OWN...

The new OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is launching on January 1, 2011! OWN programming will include original series and specials, all focused on entertaining, informing and inspiring people to live their best lives.

New Years...New Years Resolutions...the start of an inspiration network... there's nothing wrong with trying to make some changes or improvements in your life. If a day of the year provides some hope why pooh-pooh it? (Step aside cynics.)

I used my birthday last year to create a list of "39" things to do within the year. Like all good ideas or list of important "things to do" I put it in a folder looking at it once and a while. Did you know "things" don't happen when they are in a file or tucked away? I'm making my list public. After today it will also be on the side of my blog. By the New Year...I will have my OWN...list complete.
(Highlighted if done since my birthday)

1. Travel...Going to Switzerland was beyond my wildest dreams
2. Plan a girls weekend...Two years in a row now! :)
3. Make something to wear...in public.
4. Improve my French (Maybe I've improved, but it's not going to get highlighted...)
5. Volunteer
6. Send birthday cards on time
7. Can veggies/fruit/jam.....
8. Re-decorate our bedroom...I started, but it's not done (half highlighted)
9. Spend the night at my grandma's house/my husband's grandpa's house
10. Go fishing with my husband and his grandpa
11. Loose weight the right way
12. Get a facial
13. See Zack Brown band in concert
14. See more of Canada
15. Open an Etsy Shop
16. Read War and Peace
17. Continue horseback riding
18. Exercise more...I've committed to 3 days a week, but not the intensity I would like
19. Write more
20. Understand myself more...a bit tricky
21. Read more
22. Support my husband more in this 1 1/2 years of his Phd.
23. Try....harder (that requires another list)
24. Make someone's day (Be an Oprah to someone...)
25. Set up a plan for our future children.

That's how far I got. The last one could possibly be the most important, but our options are limited right now. $20,000...the magic number. It's always on my mind and pulling at my heart. Someday.

OWN...that's a pretty cool title. It carries a lot meaning, but if Oprah can do it so can I....in my OWN way.

Going for Good!

I'm going to let me feet touch the ground. I will replacing the hooves that have me clomping through my day with feathers.

I'm going to listen instead of trying to remember
what's on my to-do list while politely nodding.

I'm going to mix and stir with tender strokes.
Instead of grunting four letter words while whipping and turning.

The next few weeks have "good" tucked into the closest
drawer while striving for "perfection".

I'm going for good enough because there are
so many moments I don't want to miss.

Marriage

(Something I saw on Facebook today....)

MARRIAGE

When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I've got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn't know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly.

She didn't seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn't talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn't love her anymore. I just pitied her!

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company.

She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn't have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane.

When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn't want anything from me, but needed a month's notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month's time and she didn't want to disrupt him with our broken marriage.

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day.

She requested that every day for the month's duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Jane about my wife's divorce conditions. . She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn't had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don't tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outsidethe door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn't looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me.

On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn't tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me... she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it's time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn't noticed that our life lacked intimacy.

I drove to office.... jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind...I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won't divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn't value the details of our lives, not because we didn't love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart.

Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away.

At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I'll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed - dead.

My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push thru with the divorce.-- At least, in the eyes of our son--- I'm a loving husband....

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse's friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

If you don't share this, nothing will happen to you. If you do, you just might save a marriage.

Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

Real? Not real? I'm not sure I care. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did.

Falling...

Mother Nature is waving her wand.

For the last few days I have been walking down denial alley with frozen toes. I'm not ready to shove my piggies into shoes.

I tried a peep toe heel today. I was cold and felt a bit ridiculous...like I was wearing white after Labor Day. (I don't really care about that fashion rule...especially after finding the comfiest white linen Calvin Klein pants on clearance.)

Now, I look to fashion (on a budget) to ease me into the Fall season.
Don't get me wrong... I LOVE FALL. It's just a hard transition because I love me some flip-flops.

All of these photos are from Vogue.com 100 Under $100.00 article. Sassy and stylish, I think I like it. How about you?

Cupcakes again...

I'm circling the cupcakes like a turkey vulture does roadkill. Circling....circling...circling.

Is it me or is it twice as hard to commit to a diet...cough, I mean a better way of eating when your away from home. Just shy of a week and I feel the scales tipping and my pants getting tighter. Four weeks from home has me vexed with vision of added poundage.

I could walk the aisle of the farmers market all the while knowing there are four pints of ice cream in the freezer where I'm staying. Switching homes in the next day or so will only create a different- yummy- problem. (Smile...thinking of my moms food and Egg Mc E's. made by my dad.)

Working out seems so anti-social. How's that for a good excuse. Either way, I'm a master of denial and a glutton for punishment. Someone pass me a cupcake...I mean a carrot.

The "B" Word!

There are only a few things that make me really uncomfortable. At the top of my list is when my husband uses the "b" word.

Budget...

I scramble for a seat while reaching for a paper bag. (I store them under cushions for such occasions.) Being the gentleman that he is, he's quick to rub my back while I struggle for oxygen, but he is still going to talk about money as soon as I am done gasping. Eventually, I retire my Oscar winning performance for best drama and listen with one ear....

Fast forward...That was me a few years ago. I have since matured (a bit) and listen with both ears and sometimes participate.

When one door closes (more like slams shut on my pretend Christian Louboutin shoes) another one has to open right....right? It's like being in front of 1000 doors with only one key. I had to try a lot of doors to find a way to live with the dreaded b-word.

Door number 1: Didn't open, so I kicked it and broke my big toe.

Door number 13: I decided to shop at second hand stores. While I've always enjoyed them I didn't have to go there. Do you know what I found out? I still don't have to. If you shop at the right time you can get new items at amazing prices. I still go to second hand store, but don't be fooled the prices aren't always better.

Door number 22: I searched high and low for coupons that I can use in Canada. This was sort of a dead end for me. I did find some, but nothing that compares to the US. (If you know of any please pass them along.) Ultimately, like clothing I started shopping smarter. I compare prices and maximize on special. We treat ourselves to a few nice things, but save them for special occasions. I also plan meals. This eliminates waste... I also learned how to can stuff. *Not always a cheaper way to go, but it's still fun to do. (Try finding someone who has a fabulous garden and swap skills or stuff for veggies.)

Door number 30: I learned how to live smarter by going Green. I rarely run my dryer (exception towels), most of our items are unplugged and we have wind up alarm clocks. (Just a few examples.....)

Door number 44: I sold things on Ebay. Bye-bye Chanel jeans that were too small... sniff!

Door number 53...my favorite door to date: I decided to try and win most if not all of my gifts for family and friends in 2010. I was embarrassed at first... I didn't want to share this with my readers or family or friends. I didn't want the recipient to think that there wasn't thought put into their gift, which couldn't be further from the truth. I tried to win things for certain people...and a few fun things for me too. I'm having a blast!

Door number 76: I started writing reviews on my blog. It really is a way to try something that I might not be able to buy...what to buy (because of the cost)... didn't know to buy. I also believe honest reviews help others. I love having the opportunity to give something away too.

Door number 89: To dreadful to talk about..... (just kidding)

Door number 101: I learned how to use my sewing machine. If I couldn't win my gifts I could make them. (I'm not sure this is putting me on the "best gift giver" list. :D)

Door number 110: I started doing odd jobs for friends and family. Ex. Dog grooming, cleaning, baby sitting.......

Door number 120: I learned how to ask for help...NOT EASY or fun....and say "yes" when someone offers something. I'm blessed and thankful. For those who have helped my husband and I, we truly look forward to the day that we can repay you.

The doors keep opening and I keep peaking inside.

What are some of your money saving ideas?

*I feel the need to explain myself....If we were in the United States I would be working full-time. Since my French is dismal my options are limited. Experience is priceless....

It's Up to You!

Make the decision to do something different.

See the beauty. Be in the moment. Look at it with new eyes.

A special moment can come just after a dark cloud.
(Photos taken on my hike last Saturday.Yes... I got wet, but it was worth it.)

One thing leads to another

For a very long time I had to take sleeping pills to get restful sleep, but I've decided to stop popping those pills and let nature take it's course. Unfortunately, nature has me up early, to bed late and yearning for a nap around 3:00. (Menopause sucks!)

This morning: The first story I read about then watched on t.v. is the police officer in Seattle. The one who punched a 17 year old girl in the face. What the? Then I watched a clip on skin cancer which had me almost completely disrobed in front of a full length mirror. Thank goodness for my orange wrap.

Oops, I mean.....
Burrr.
Once in front of the mirror then weight loss found it's way into newly developed paranoid mind. The nakedness worked. I put on a t-shirt and shorts to workout then realized either my t-shirt shrunk or my belly is getting bigger. I cursed the dryer for taking advantage of my cotton not my stomach for loving doughnuts.
Walking out the front door, I was greeted by rain. Since I am prone to melting due to my sweetness...because of the doughnuts I had no other option. I am now sitting on the couch fighting off my first nap of the day...all because I'm not taking sleeping pills.

16 and Sailing....

I don't know about you, but when I was 16 I was gossiping about boys, going to TCBY and crimping my hair. I wasn't setting out on a solo mission to circumnavigate my boat around the globe to break a record. That was the intent on January 23, 2010 from Marina del Rey as Abby Sunderland (16) and her boat Wild Eyes departed Los Angeles County. There is something cool about this story, but something crazy too. The Abby Sunderland articles I read a few days ago haven't been replaced by another media story, so I'm thinking we should talk about it. (Click here for one of her blogs.)

How many years of experience allows someone to be an expert in their sport? Is this something you gain by peers or determined by yourself? You would want to be considered an expert if attempting to do this right? I believe the law states we are adults when we turn 18. Did I mention Abby is 16? Yes, that's right I did. (Oh, that smells of judgment on my behalf...I'm actually not completely for or against this....I'm riding the fence.)

While not throwing any stones or placing judgment it's difficult for me to understand how at 16 any parents could allow their child to do this. Believing in your child is one thing, wanting the most for your child too, but if the worst were to happen isn't there something in our system that could possible charge them with a crime for allowing this to happen? I'm not joking nor do I want or believe this should happen, but seeking emotional revenge does happens. Where would the responsibility fall?

On Abby's blog, in one of her last entries, she said that minutes after boarding the rescue ship she received calls from reporters. Continuing in the same sentence she said "now that something bad has happened". Without having the complete story I wondered how much attention she tried to get before she began? Visions of another reality show are danced in my head or should I say spinning out of control...

What are your thoughts?

For the record... I think Abby is an amazing young girl and I am impressed by her drive as well as her attitude. She made up her mind to do something and she is doing it, well tried to do it. When her plans failed she had a great attitude about not only seeing what she did as a success, but she recognized her accomplishments without worrying too much about criticism. She is a young girl to admire!

Blogging

The fan is on. I rest my head on a pillow that takes my shape like gently folded hands to rest upon. Forced air is twirling my hair and I feel my eye starting to drift downward. Fighting to finish the day with words from the blogging world I click one more time to a new name with a new story. Another door opens into someones life. The talent captivates me so much that my yawns disappear and my wide eyes grasp for more.

Size Doesn't Matter

We're talking about blogs, so if you were expecting something else mosey along. (Smile) All week I was celebrating 500 followers of my blog. It was a lot of fun and I hope everyone enjoyed it. While I expected to do one more day of giveaways, today I've decided to focus on the four giveaways and save one for another time. Surprise giveaways are fun too!

It isn't about the size of a blog. It's about the content and I haven't been giving content lately.....
This morning I was at SITS and they asked us to leave a comment with a best post. When I had to go back for months I realized that my blog has been sucking.... I haven't been writing the way I intended. For that I am sorry! I hereby pledge (wait I need to get my quill and ink... o.k. I'm ready) to write better.

I really enjoy writing reviews and up until last week I would only write one a week...it is titled Monday To Do...Review/Giveaway. Tuesday I write my burning question. Please stop by on Tuesdays it's a lot of fun and I love to read everyone's answers. I will continue with that. Wednesday is Wordless Wednesday. The rest of the week is just "stuff". So, that what's going on in my neck of the woods.

I was lost and didn't know it, but now I'm found and ready to write.

What sort of things would you like me to write about?
