Happy Birthday and Deviled Eggs

(Not my photo....)
Is it a sign that I am getting older when I make deviled eggs for a party? Seriously, what is up with that? I honestly had no idea where this thought came from. One minute I am looking in the fridge for inspiration and the next thing I know....shazam...I'm boiling eggs. The best or maybe worst part was that I had to call my mom (who is sun bathing in Florida while I'm freeze my &^% off here in Quebec) to get her recipe. Oh wait, I first looked in the cookbook she made for "the girls" one year as Christmas gifts. When I found the recipe it said to add a dash of this, a pinch of that and something to taste.... what does that mean? Lingo my peeps don't use. We say things like "can that be delivered"....or "what time will that be ready".... Isn't that sad? (A bit of an exaggeration, but you get it.)

Husband: "What are you going to make for the party?"
Me: "You know, I boiled some eggs and I'm thinking about making d. eggs."
Husband: "Are you kidding?"
Me: "No."
Husband: "Ohhhhh...."
Me: "What?"

He prepared a delectable venison medallions with herbed cheese sauce dish. So much cooler than mine.

To fill you in...the party was for my friend who turned 40 today. There were 4 of us planning this surprise shindig. 40th balloons strewn about, obnoxious confetti sprinkled on the the tables, friends from work and play gathered in the kitchen to shout Bonne Fete. She was surprised and very happy. The food was wonderful and my deviled eggs were gone in the first round. For the record, pate freaks me out and I have yet to go to a Q.C. party where it is absent from the fixens. Oh, and stinky cheese is a popular favorite here too. Locker room, dirty socks, B.O. stinky....and they devour it. They love it. I can not get past the smell. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the cultural differences, but that cheese stinks.

*Awkward moment of the night: I am carrying one of the four cakes into the room full of people, the other three were close behind me. (A birthday cake train.) In my best mid soprano singing voice (a little Marilyn Monroe huskiness for effect)... out comes "Happy Birthday to you...." while the other 20 people start to sing "Bonne Fete....."IN FRENCH. Ding , Ding, Ding....who let the Anglophone lead the pack?

Hey, last day for my 100th post giveaway. Click Here and help me celebrate!

Sorry if I had gobs of spelling/grammatical errors...once again I'm in a hurry. Off to surprise her with something else. (I'll fill you in tomorrow night.) Have a great weekend.

LOL I have no idea how I would survive living in a different country (especially a French speaking one - almost failed French in college!)

The food being so different all day, every day - I love different food, but I Think I'd have to make some home-favorites now and again. The d. eggs sound yummy! We have a horseradish d. egg recipe we love. Makes great egg salad too!

Oh what fun! I love to cook, but I have NEVER made deviled eggs! Southern Living has had some recipes with a twist, but I never get around to boiling the eggs! But I always eat them when they are at a gathering. That is funny about the cheese and the birthday song!

Oh, you gave me some good laughs here. Glad you were vindicated in your choice of deviled eggs.

I know what you mean about the deviled eggs/ age relation. When does that happen? :)

And why on Earth would someone want to put dirty socks in their mouth? I'm with you - ick!

Happy Birthday to your friend.

I think deviled eggs are the bomb diggity! I love them, so I think that you made a very good choice! I'm with you on the pate...I've tried it once, because I'm just that way. I won't be doing it again anytime soon though!

LOL I made d. eggs maybe once or twice :) and I really don't know why or for what occasion LOL

i LOVE deviled eggs. i've been wanting to make some lately, but you know- that's a serious commitment and i end up eating all of them. saving up for a low cholesterol week. :) you can never go wrong with them. EVER.

i laughed so hard when i heard your singing story! :) with you, of course. that is so something i'd do.

and yes- stinky cheese. seriously. i about lost my cookies in a french grocery store cheese aisle (for one- a WHOLE AISLE devoted to cheese?!) after the stench got to me. and yes- those peeps eat it up!!! :)

bon fete a tu ami! (ok, so tu is a spanish word...and i think ami is right...there's a cleaner called bon ami and i think it translates to "good friend"- how sad is my french?)

I don't eat eggs so I have never made deviled eggs. I'm also not keen on the smell of boiled eggs at all so we don't do that for Easter either.

Wow, 4 cakes! That must have been quite a party.

Your talk of smelly foods reminds of our days of eating Cool Ranch Doritos all the time, those are definitely smelly.

I made deviled eggs for the first time for our Super Bowl party....they turned out really good....I ate too many!

Have fun!

the reason deviled eggs are first gone at the parties I attend, is because I've eaten them all. unless they're watery... eew

well now you have another thing to add to your to do list. learn "Bonne Fete"

and im with you on the stinky stuff, CANT DO IT! if it doesnt smell good, its not goin in my mouth!

First off, I think the Cookbook that your Mom did was a really cool idea! I don't see anything wrong with d-eggs. It actually sounds good right now! lol
Sounds like you had a good turn out for the b-day party. Cool.
I turn 40 this summer, hopefully my hubby wont throw an 'over the hill' party!! lol
Take care! ;0)

My sister who is 25, ALWAYS, makes deviled eggs for parties/family get-to-gethers.... She says she's perfected the art of deviling eggs..and gets very offended if someone suggests that either a. we don't have them, or b. that they'll bring them

I have an award for you

I happen to love deviled eggs. It's one of my favorite things about Easter!

I have a treat for you over at my place! Come see!

LOL! Deviled eggs are always a hit at any party:) My mom made my sister and I cookbooks of all the family recipes too. I really need to use it!

My motto is if it stinks, it is NOT going in my mouth! (Funny post!)

I don't know why either, but deviled eggs are always a big hit. Most people never think to make them but people love them. My husband theorizes that women love them. Perhaps the fertility thing - who knows. It's like those pillbury dough wrapped cocktail weenies. I had a New Years Eve Party and was afraid people would think they were white trash food, but people couldn't get enough of them. White trash food RULES at parties!

Hey, don't worry about the deviled egg thing. I own a special plate just to hold them! I'm waaay more old-ladyish than you - by far. (Crack - oh, there goes that other hip.)

Just wanted to stop by and say thank you for becoming a follower on my blog - I really appreciate that!

Take care and see you around the blogosphere soon!

I love the story...too funny that your hubby is a gourmet chef....but hey your eggs were a hit so "in your face hubby!" I am totally with you on the "can we get that delivered" school of cooking. I'm hopeless and helpless in the kitchen. And I'm sure the song sounded better when you sang it anyway!

Love me some deviled eggs.
I don't like to make them only eat them. I'm a brat like that.

Kim Sue said...

too funny...I'm from the south where it isn't a party unless there are deviled eggs. In fact not only do I have a plate especially for them, I have plates especially for them depending on what occasion I am making them (pottery, china, christmas dishes, to-go, and even a couple of plastic give aways in the pantry)
